Practices for Perceptual Change

Strange Intruders (20 minutes, 2026), featuring the voices of heat snacking on pine seeds, a medley of birds in protracted response and call, senses, stutters and relational thought growing through process philosophers Erin Manning and Brian Massumi, twitches of bark, the sun’s dial, quivers of winds, and phonic pulls from Sher Doruff. Feeling the interstices of perception, the film crafts a rhythmic ecology of nonseparable sensing, where thought feels, sight touches, cadence potentiates.

Erin Manning works in the interstices of philosophy, aesthetics and politics, with a longstanding concern for alter-pedagogical and alter-economic practices. Her books include The Minor Gesture (2016), For a Pragmatics of the Useless (2020), Out of the Clear (2022), Unsettled (2026), and Earth Unlimited – Understories (2027). Her current artistic research unfolds through 3E, an exploration of the transversality of the three ecologies: the social, the environmental and the conceptual. An iteration of 3E is the 3Ecologies Project, a land-based experiment north of Montreal where living and learning are explored together. Legacies of SenseLab infuse the project, particularly the question of how collectivity is crafted through more-than human encounters with worlds in the making.

Brian Massumi is the author of numerous works across philosophy, political theory, and art theory, including the foundational Parables for the Virtual (2002). With Erin Manning and the 3Ecologies Project, he participates in the collective exploration of new ways of bringing philosophical and artistic practices into collaborative interaction.

Sher Doruff works and teaches in the material, sonic and performance arts. For the past twenty-five years her work has been situated in the expanded field of artistic research practice as an artist, writer, mentor, and supervisor. Her research practice explores fabulative approaches to writing and composition. She is Emeritus Professor of Film and Media at the Research Centre of Stockholm University of the Arts, was head of pre-PhD research programs at DAS Graduate School (AHK) and Gerrit Rietveld Academy. Her novella Last Year at Betty and Bob’s An Actual Occasion (2021) completes the Betty and Bob trilogy, published by Ecologies/Punctum Books. In recent years she began dabbling again in music-making for the fun of it. (https://soundcloud.com/sherdoruff)

ro heinrich is learning with relational fieldings transversing spoken and unspoken languaging. Through (recorded) conversations and collaborations, their practice grows where practice orients, and with an emphasis on film- and bookmaking. Her work stages the refusal to separate the (always already more-than) human and nonhuman, world and body. Attentive to mobilising collective conversation, they collaboratively craft public screening and reading events, attuning with questions posed through their works. Ro recently began a Research Creation PhD, with the Humanities programme at Concordia University, Montreal, with Erin Manning, Sher Doruff and Shira Avni as (co-)supervisors.

On film titles and references

Strange Intruders is a concept from C. S. Peirce, further thought-with in The Personality of Power, A Theory of Fascism for Anti-fascist Life, Brian Massumi, 2025, published with Duke University Press. Some openings to this concept: ‘The reflexive I, far from being a bounded, particular identity, is a synthetic form of overlap with the outside— a “conjunctive synthesis” in Deleuze and Guattari’s vocabulary— peaking in individual, first-person expression and in the feeling that fills its moment. The “lesser strength” of the other-component in first-person expression is enveloped in the overtaking “I” that comes to own, and thus supersede, it. What we experience as our “internal” stream of consciousness is thought propelled by the incoming of the other. Each new thought is a “strange intruder” from the other-world. Even “internal” to the flow of its personal historic route, I is its own other (its other owned). Strange intruders come in crowds. Behind each, there are many, forming a series.’ The Personality of Power, p.101–102.

Toward a Theory of Fascism for Anti-Fascist Life. A Process Vocabulary, Brian Massumi, published with Minor Compositions, 2025, is companion to The Personality of Power.

Thinking always with ensembles of friends, among many others, in Strange Intruders Erin Manning and Brian Massumi call in the following concepts and thinkers:
Stefano Harney and Fred Moten, -we owe each other other everything- , The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning & Black Study (Minor Compositions, 2013): 20.
Nietzsche, Deleuze, -becoming equal to the event-
Deleuze, -belief in the world-
Fred Moten, -Holosensual field- ; “Fred Moten with Jarrett Earnest”, The Brooklyn Rail), 2017.
Karl Marx, -When the senses become theoreticians in their practice- .
Lorenzo Kom’boa Ervin, Anarchism and the Black Revolution(London: Pluto Press, 2021).

Strange Intruders’s sister film The Being of Relation (2025) thinks with and lends its title from Erin Manning’s book, published in 2025, with Intellect Books, Bristol.

More on this THIRDtalk - Experiments in collective study

Experiments in collective study

This collaborative research and the films The Being of Relation and Strange Intruders were shared with researchers through experiments in collective study. With the film’s (rough cut) screenings, reading together, live sound and performance, we experimented crafting conditions for collective conversation for thinking-with the film’s aesthetico-political practices and propositions both spoken and felt.

These experiments began in the framework of ARIAS’, platform for research through the arts and science, programme series weaving stories curated by Nienke Scholts, in collaboration with reschooling-with, DAS Graduate School, Framer Framed, Sher Doruff and Reza Mirabi. Collectively, we gave shape to the collective study series weaving stories—The Being of Relation.

These experiments then moved to Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Montreal, in the context of the exhibition IGNITION 21: HOW TO… (Mode d’emploi), curated by Nicole Burisch and Florent To Lay (of Centre des arts actuels SKOL). Collaborators in these collective study events were artists-researchers Diego Gil, Andrés Salas-Parra, Erica Biolchini, Ingrid Enriquez-Donissaint, M Gnanasihamany, Erin Manning and Brian Massumi.
